Photographer Simon Wheatley gained the trust of key figures in the UK grime culture who allowed him to capture the harsh elements of the London streets with its raw violence and drug taking as well as the more personal and private moments of their lives. The portraits and commentary from the likes of Dizee Rascal, Wiley, Skepta and others where brought together creating a insightful book called 'Don't Call Me Urban'

Un-cool Geneva

Graffiti, or “graff” is not cool.

It was cool in 1979 when Fab 5 Freddie was at it but, with the way trends come and go, it was probably loosing interest with the cool set by 1984 when the film Beat Street was made. Making a Hollywood film out of any trend has a habit of killing it. For reference see Thrashing.

So, graffiti is not cool. But on the up side, like skateboarding which is also not cool, it’s become something more than just a trend. And once something loses it’s cool status you’re left with the real players who weren’t in it for fashion but because they sincerely love it and are generally pretty good at it.

I was thinking about this on my way to work in Geneva. I’ve got a half hour walk from Saint-Jean to Carouge and along this route I see a lot of Graffiti. Geneva is commonly known as a pretty uncool city. There’s too many transient NGO workers and boring bankers to ever really turn Geneva into anywhere cool.

But what about all the expatriated kids who are dragged along with their parents to live in this “better place”? Teenagers who are desperate to fit in, even though there’s nothing to fit in with? Well, maybe that’s why there’s so much “cool” graffiti in and around Geneva. In a city that has no great voice the people are speaking up on the walls.

Maybe it’s a good thing that Geneva is not cool. It’s got nothing to live up to but if you know where to look you’ll still find some cool shit.

Here are some pictures I took on way to work. (Apologies to the artists for the poor quality of the shots, they were just taken on my phone).

This shot doesn't do this bike justice... It was 20 feet tall.

I love this. It's like HR Giger as been down here with a can.

Shoreditch Department of Advertising Correction

On my way into work in sleepy Carouge, Geneva, I came across the Shoreditch Department of Advertising Correction.

As a person who works in advertising this is not a sight you want to see on your way into work. Who knows what they might want? Could I have put a hyphen in the wrong place on my last headline or was the last shot I used not 300dpi?

So far they haven't come knocking for me.

So, to make things more interesting, I left a Saatchi&Saatchi business card under their windscreen wiper and asked them if they wanted to pop in for a cuppa.

The kettle's on but no takers yet.

As an extra goody there will be the premiere of the Art Clash video (by Pussiesparadise) in full length and a after party with Pablo Color & Stardust.

I was able to contact Brian in between shifts at his cafe for a brief but exclusive interview.

ARAB: Hello Brian how was it working with Ricky and Steve on set of Cemetery Junction?

BRIAN: Very awkward. I've never liked anything that they have done in the past, bunch of idiots those two. I basically did it for the money. My Dihutsu hi-jet van had broken down... I think I got about 700 quid which wasn't bad.

ARAB: Did you struggle at all with learning your lines?

BRIAN: Yes! especially if you are not interested in the project you are working on. I wanted to speak to Ralph Fiennes to ask for advice but he didn't want to come near me, basically he gave me a wide berth.

ARAB: How have people in the cafe reacted to your movie performance?

BRIAN: Well it's not really their cup of tea. They don't understand all this celebrity businesses.

ARAB: What film would you like to be in next?

BRIAN: Well errrrr, I've seen that Sylvester Stallone is making a new film called Expendables looks bloody brilliant, I want to be in that or the squeal.

The Australian’s call it Walkabout, a chance to escape from the routine, heading into the empty wilderness to empty the body and soul of built up trash, we call it FLAT OUT.

Using the simplest and cleanest form of transport, a Track bike. Four cyclists, meet at the Sydney Opera House in Australia, to embark on a journey into extreme terrain during dangerous summer conditions, riding a massive 1200km of road in only ten days to the city of Melbourne.

With the monumental landscapes of Australia as the backdrop, a country and continent all in one that has some of the most diverse wildlife and landscapes on the planet, this challenging and hill ridden terrain proved the perfect situation to film a documentary. The riders were captured having to conquer their own inner demons to complete the journey within the ten days. Cycling an average 8 hours a day getting from one destination to the next, this experience allowed all of them to take stock and reflect, traveling on a more spiritual and inward journey. Each rider’s story being expressed individually using words, photos; drawings, music and a personal diary filmed on super 8 films. This will result in a film and book capturing the journey and experience from start to finish available later this year.

The question is… did they make it?

Here's the ad we shot for TalkTalk.
Shot on 80 cameras in a time slice array plus a bunch of digital stills cameras for stop motion. Directed by Noah Harris from Blink and involving Lichtfaktor, a german based light graffiti crew, plus 50 artist, dancers and gynasts. This was all done in camera without any CGI. The track is Neon Rainbow by the Box Tops and the voice over is Helana Bonham Carter.

I took a trip to Ascona at the weekend and had an amazing time sampling all that the area had to offer, nice food, wine, scenary and people.

In the evening whilst walking the streets I came across this stylish beauty, meet HENK.

The story goes that one Christmas eve, a Dutch real estate magnate Henk van de Meene found himself lugging a heavy suitcase through the snow outside LaGuardia airport. Struggling with the weight and awkwardness of his suitcase, Henk knew there had to be a better solution. He decided then that if the luggage industry wasn’t going to make a better bag, he would create his own - a strong, agile case.

After 10 years of tinkering and a protoytype getting lots of attention from fellow travelers Henk decided to manufacture it on a very limited scale. He then turned turned to frog design to help with the styling. Each case consists of 500 separate parts (more than 22 of them moving), fashioned variously from red Italian burl, black ebony, horse hair, magnesium, aluminum, titanium, carbon fiber, parachute fabric and the finest leathers. Its mechanisms are smooth, ingenious. Depress an ebony button on the handle, pull up the handle, and two 6 1/4" diameter wheels emerge noiselessly from louvered doors within the case, like landing gear emerging from an airplane.

The result is the height of luxury, shared by word of mouth and sold to elite travelers the world over, Henk are hand made in very limited numbers per year in order to guarantee quality and exclusivity to customers.

And the price? A snip at just 20,000 swiss francs.

I've had the pleasure of visiting Brian's cafe, sampling a bacon sandwich and some of his jokes, both of which i can report were absolutely terrible. If you are up in Scotland you can see Brian make a right big tit out of himself by booking tickets here for the Edinburgh shows over the coming month.

Started shooting the brand ad a few days ago and things are looking good.
Even though the SA crew keep f**king things up and now we have to shoot tonight instead of having a night off to party.

Part of this shoot involves a time slice camera set up, like the one used on the Matrix, so I thought I'd show you some highly confidential pictures of it. 80 cameras all set up to fire off at the same time and record data from 180 degrees.

It's only confidential because the guy we're using apparently invented the thing and someone copied his idea and used it to shoot the matrix. The dude's never really got over that and keeps trying to make his rig better and better. But subsequently is paranoid to shit that someone's gonna rip it off again before he can patent it... Like anyone really gives a toss. He's Canadian but now lives in Geneva. He's the most boring man I've ever met and when I asked him what it's like living in Geneva, he said "boring". Which I think proves my long thought belief that only boring people get bored.

Anyway here's a few pics from our shoot so far. Don't spread them round... Oh shit... i've just stuck'm on the world wide web.

Ha s'it bru?

Been in Johannesburg for almost a week now shooting a new commercial for a British 'Telecommunications company' and, even though the pictures would suggest otherwise , it is not an eighties pop promo with lions and fat people.

The first pic is one of our sets but hopefully it's going to look a lot more interesting when 'the magic' happens.

The second is something I saw when I came out of the rugby game on Saturday. I have absolutely no interest in rugby but these two tickled me somewhat.

And the third is when we went to play with the baby lions.

I have actually seen much more interesting things in my last week, like when I got pissed with chief Buthelezi's son and Africa's top comedian David Kau, but I failed to take any pictures of that.

Will try and get some better pics this week.

Setup in the new year '2009' and based in the matte area of Bern, 'Switzerland's capitol city,' once a month they hold an afternoon drawing session which is free and open to all who have a love for scribbling and freestyle drawing fun. Each month a topical location is chosen and once all the peeps have arrived various subject's / ideas are then put forward. So far i have been to Cindy's all American dinner 'they serve the best burgers' and the Bremmgaten pine woodland in Bern. The session always ends at a good drinking spot where the fun and drawing continues with everyone sharing black books, ideas and humorous story's. It's very relaxed and personally I have found it to be a wicked opportunity to experience some great skill first hand whilst also encouraging myself to explore and improve my own drawing technique. A massive big shout out to Silvio, Jared, Phillip and all the other good peeps... see ya next month, Mutz ;-)

A middle-aged slacker living in a rundown, graffiti-ridden slum, his job involves being shocked by bolts of electricity that transform him into a stocky, stick-wielding giant several stories high. He is entrusted with defending Japan from a host of bizarre monsters, however while his predecessors were national heroes, he is a pariah among the citizens he protects, who bitterly complain about the noise and destruction of property he causes. He also has his own problems, an agent insistent on branding him with sponsor advertisements, an Alzheimer-afflicted grandfather who transforms into a giant in dirty underwear, and a family who is embarrassed by his often cowardly exploits. A wickedly deadpan spin on the giant Japanese superhero, BIG MAN JAPAN is an outrageous portrait of a pathetic but truly unique hero.

Now then , now then, how's about this for a place to work.

A few years ago Milan based company Comvert decided that it was time to find a new location and set up some fresh headquarters. Studiometrico were given the opportunity to search for the right building and then to refurbish it. The ideal place had to be spacious enough to be able to host the administrative department, the design department, a flagship store, a storage facility, have a wide access for the goods in and out and contain a skate-bowl for bastard employees, friends and team riders. But on a night out in Madrid, after a few bottles the Sangre de Toro, me and a friend started messing around with the long exposure on his camera.

Inevitably it ended up with a knob gag.

A while back in September last year I posted a really bad clip of some strange UFO's that my friends and i saw in the sky over the Swiss city of Bern, today i found this clip of the exact same thing only over the skies in Peru.
Be prepared people for they are coming.

I was out on the bike just cruising the old town this pm when a painting caught my eye in the window of the BG25 gallery in Bern. I stopped for a quick gander and stumbled upon this amazing and lovely artist called Alfredo Vanni. He and I chatted for ages stumbling through our words as he spoke no english and i spoke poco italian but on a level we connected with each other. The meeting left me feeling so inspired and energized about my own art and chosen path making me realize that you just have to keep going and going nothing is set in stone you call the shots, you make the change it's one life that you live in the best way you can. Thanks Alfredo.

If the graffiti tradition of adopting a number after your tag (similar to Taki 183, from 183rd Street, NYC) then the artist Chu’s number is definitely FIFTY ONE.

Exploring (literally) new perspectives and embracing computer-aided technologies, Chu’s work has continued to push back the boundaries of graffiti since he first began experimenting with aerosol paint & home computers in the late 1980’s describing his creations as gently reminding us of the everyday conflict between digital and analogue devices.

This new collection charts a journey in the UK from the town of Walsall to the city of Birmingham, along the A34 road, the flagship route for bus number 51. 12 new paintings and simultaneous, limited edition, screen print releases will be shown alongside a warehouse space containing an installation created specifically for this long awaited comeback show.

This is a must see... Chu's solo show 51 degrees, Digbeth, near Birmingham City Centre UK on Thursday April 24th 2009 Saint George’s day.
